Sunday, November 6, 2016 | 3:00pm

Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Baltimore MD (map)

Our season continues with the music of Mahler! We perform Gustav Mahler’s The Song of the Earth, alongside a world premiere by featured composer Natalie Draper. Taylor Hillary Boykins and Joshua Diaz make their Symphony Number One debut.

Where Your Money Goes

Symphony Number One is a conduit in service of modern composers and diverse audiences. Your support will have a lasting impact on not only the lives of our featured composers and performers, but also on the chamber orchestra repertoire.  This season, your support is directly funding performances of pieces by composers like Natalie Draper.  Symphony Number One will be premiering Draper’s Timelapse Variations for chamber orchestra in November!

Draper shares: “Timelapse Variations (2016), for chamber orchestra, is a musical reflection on the timelapse technique in film. I have always been fascinated by how change and growth are perceived in timelapse videos. For me, the timelapse technique, with its surreal perception of change, distances the audience from the image, allowing for a vastly removed perspective--almost as if you are witnessing life from above. The image inherently becomes a meditation on the passage of time itself. In this way, Timelapse Variations is a meditation on musical change and is perhaps more of a soundscape than a traditional symphonic narrative. The piece has several sections, all of which incorporate a variety of processes of gradual change. Many thanks to Symphony No. 1 for the opportunity to write this piece.”  You can check out more of Natalie Draper's music here.

In addition to allowing us to commission amazing works by great and emerging composers, the funds you provide directly underwrite the costs of producing our concerts and enable us to:

  • Pay our core ensemble and guest artists

  • Book the best concert venues

  • Produce and market high-quality commercial recordings

  • Organize and fund intimate performances of works for smaller ensembles as part of our Beethoven’s Kitchen Series

  • Publicize our concerts through print and electronic media

  • Cover production costs such as lighting and sound

  • Pay municipal and state fees, music rental fees, and other operating costs

Stretch Goals

$15,000 - Education & Outreach

Symphony Number One is looking to partner with Innovation Village in Baltimore to bring amazing new music to all corners of our community.  With this amount of support, we would be able to fund additional projects and collaborations to reach unique audiences throughout our area.

$18,000 - Beethoven’s Kitchen

If we raise $18,000, our entire 2016-2017 Beethoven’s Kitchen chamber series will be completely funded!  Featuring well-loved standards from the classical world alongside tasty treats from amazing new composers, this smaller, more intimate chamber series is a new favorite of Symphony Number One audiences.

$20,000 - Raising the Bar

Symphony Number One is comprised of an amazing group of musicians and we work with supremely talented composers for every performance.  We are always looking for ways to better compensate all these musicians for their efforts.  With $20,000 in support, we can raise our musicians’ base pay, give more substantial awards to our featured composers, and increase the number of new compositions that we are able to perform each concert season.

$25,000 - “SNO on the Road” Tour

We want to bring our unique approach to chamber music to live audiences outside the Baltimore community, and this is the kind of funding that will allow us to do just that.  If we raise $25,000, we can move forward with our plans to take Symphony Number One on an East Coast tour, perhaps even including a performance in New York City!

$30,000 - We’re On Our Way!

Raising $30,000 in support will allow us to present four main concert cycles, three Beethoven’s Kitchen performances, and a number of smaller outreach performances in addition to paying our musicians, venue and recording fees, and covering administrative and operating costs.  We know it seems like a lot of money, but we know exactly how to put it to good use!

Risks & Challenges

With a team of people who have launched many successful funding campaigns for projects in the past, we walk in with our eyes open to the challenges that young organizations face. Hidden venue or rental costs, last-minute changes, and even the weather can conspire to make projects like these challenging to complete. But that is also the thrill of live performances: With our experience, these beautiful and fragile performances are in steady hands from beginning to end.

Other Ways You Can Help
